TRAINER SKILLS

TRAIN THE TRAINER

One of Uni-Signal's flagship products, the Train the Trainer program, comes in a variety of "flavours." The four-day program is aimed at employees whose primary function is training. This highly-experiential program includes understanding how adults learn, presentation techniques, group discussion techniques, using various training methods and aids, and much more. Participants are videotaped presenting several segments of training programs, and then critiqued by their peers. When a world-class engineering firm needed to prepare teams to start-up a billion dollar upgraded slag processing plant, they asked Uni-Signal to help. Through intensive team building workshops, the client saved an estimated million dollars in getting the plant up and running due to improved team work and collaboration.

Two different versions of the 4-day program exist: one for corporate trainers and one for computer trainers. Similar to the program described above, the computer trainer version focuses on the different types of skills required to teach people how to use computer programs. It takes into account a completely different teacher-learner dynamic and includes numerous tips for getting and maintaining participant interest and attention.

Today's managers and professionals are frequently called upon to provide training to subordinates and peers or customers without the trainer background necessary to ensure success. A two-day program aimed at professionals and part-time trainers includes many of the components of our 4-day programs, but takes into account that the participants view training as only one of their many job functions.

TRAINING BOOKENDS:
NEEDS ASSESSMENT AND PROGRAM EVALUATION

Companies that invest significantly in either employee training or customer education know that assessing learner needs is a critical first step in designing and delivering training. This program looks at the "bookends" of training - needs assessment and program evaluation. A one-day workshop, the session explores the various ways available to determine learner needs and provides numerous examples of means and tools to determine the effectiveness of the training experience. When a major pharmaceutical company needed to train 1,000 pharmacists to interact with 10,000 patients and to gain a better understanding of why they did or did not adhere to their drug therapy, Uni-Signal developed and delivered the program. Through video-taped sample patient contacts and in-class role plays, participants learned skills that not only helped their patients be more compliant, but also improved the customer relations of the pharmacy.
